Liberal Senator Arthur Sinodinos and Hunter MP Joel Fitzgibbon were on hand to open the new Trade Training Centre yesterday.

The centre will allow students to learn cooking techniques in the industrial kitchen, along with service skills in the cafe-style dining area at the front of the building.

Principal Elizabeth Cornwall said the centre had already been used to cater for a high tea event for Mother’s Day and hosted its first wedding, with about 200 guests, last month.

She said the training centre would help students learn the skills they would need to be ready for the workforce.

The school received federal government funding to build the facility as part of the Trade Training Centre program.

Senator Sinodinos said it was up to governments to provide resources to help students reach their potential.

“Preparing people with real practical skills is going to be very important for our future,” he said.

“Giving you the facilities means you’ve got maximum choice to decide what you want to do.”

Mr Fitzgibbon said the former Rudd government provided about $4.2 million to the All Saints College cluster to build the Trade Training Centres at the St Joseph’s and St Peter’s campuses.

“Despite promising no cuts to education, Tony Abbott has cancelled every future Trades Training Centre and cut $950 million out of the budget – enough to build 650 new centres,” he said.

“Our young people need skills and work experience to get good jobs and Trade Training Centres mean high school students get the opportunity to do that.

“Denying students these opportunities will just make youth unemployment worse, and rob our young people of a fair shot at getting a job – the kind of opportunities that today’s workforce benefited from when they were young.”
