Thunder can cover the gaps

ALBURY Thunder coach Ben Jeffery is confident of filling the gaping hole left by star forwards Lou Goodwin, Mitch Davis and Jake Grace.

Jeffery has been in discussions with several forwards and hopes to secure their signatures before the start of pre-season training on November 18.

“Forwards are our priority,” he said.

“It was always going to be hard to replace Lou, Mitch and Jake, but we are talking to some good players and hopefully things will fall into place over the next couple of weeks.”

Goodwin has signed with south-west Sydney club Mounties in his first step in returning to the NRL, while Davis and Grace have also moved on from Greenfield Park.

Willie Heta is the other notable loss, with the five-eighth attracting attention from clubs around Newcastle.

“I think we will shape up alright,” Jeffery said.

“If we can get a couple of forwards and I’m talking to a centre then we will be a good side again.”

Jeffery has the tough task of taking over from Josh Cale, who took Albury to three premierships in his six seasons at the helm of the Group 9 club.

The gun fullback said he planned to use a mix of his own ideas and Cale’s next season.

“I will try and put my own style on it,” Jeffery said.

“There are things I will do differently to Josh but at the same time a lot of the things Josh put into place worked really well and we’ll stick with them.

“I’m looking forward to training starting.”
