The Stockton monitor is the last monitor in the Lower Hunter air quality monitoring network to go online.

The network’s other monitors are located at Newcastle, Beresfield, Wallsend, Mayfield and Carrington.

‘‘The network not only provides reliable in near real-time information about air quality but also provides a picture about air quality in the local area over the long term,’’ Environment Protection Authority manager Adam Gilligan said.

Data from the monitor is also being used in the Lower Hunter particle characterisation study, which aims to identify the sources of particulate pollution.

Sampling for this study began in March and will continue for 12 months using four air quality monitors at Newcastle, Beresfield, Mayfield and Stockton.

Newcastle Consultative Committee for the Environment member and Stockton resident Keith Craig said the Stockton monitor had made a valuable contribution to the understanding of air quality.

‘‘The network really shows how different areas around the port can be affected by changes in air quality,’’ he said.

The network is administered by the Office of Environment and Heritage on behalf of the Environment Protection Authority, and was modelled on the successful Upper Hunter network.

The network will also be used to produce quarterly reports about air quality in Newcastle.

Data from the Newcastle Local Air Quality Monitoring Network is available from the OEH website: http://www.environment.nsw.gov.au/aqms/newcastlelocalmap.htm.
