REMEMBERING: The Remembrance Day address will be given by a church member this year instead of a member of the Australian Defence Force.

“Normally the address is given by a military person and this is the first time in many years that a member of the church will do so,” Maitland RSL sub-branch vice-president Fred Goode OAM said.

The sub-branch president Eric Bell extended an invitation to all service personnel, ex-servicemen and women, ex-service organisations and the public to attend the Remembrance Day service at the main cenotaph in Maitland Park, starting at 10.35am.

“This year, 234 Army Cadet Unit Maitland has the honour of providing the catafalque party with Father Chris Butterworth of St Mary’s Church in Maitland giving the main address.”

Anyone wishing to lay a wreathe or pay tribute during the service on November 11 should advise the sub-branch secretary on 4933 6900 from 10am to noon.

Maitland RSL Women’s Auxiliary president Christine Kidd said they would again be selling Remembrance Day badges, poppies, pens badges and wrist bands until Monday, November 10, at various locations around Maitland and Rutherford to raise money for their welfare projects.

Mr Bell said, while Remembrance Day had originally been called Armistice Day and had been intended to remember all those who served and died in World War I, it had been renamed to remember all those who served, died or were wounded during all wars, conflicts and peace-keeping operations.
