Play-Wel for Mai-Wel, which raises money to run a program to help people with a disability become more independent, has become an excuse for business rivals to help a good cause and channel the athlete within.

Sixteen teams competed in volleyball, netball, cricket and soccer on Thursday.

The Commonwealth Bank team remained at the top of the fund-raising ladder in the lead-up to the event, and spokesman Josh McInnes said his team, which won two fund-raising accolades last year, was happy to do all it could for Mai-Wel.

‘‘It’s such a good cause to support, and it’s a good day out that’s a bit of fun as well.’’ Mai-Wel communications manager Victoria Tatum said the skills program the event helped support was in its third year and the group hoped to build a facility where it could operate throughout the week.

She said there were 18clients in the program, and each one had made a lot of progress since their first day.

‘‘We hope to raise at least $20,000from this event to go towards this important program,’’ Ms Tatum said.

‘‘The program teaches clients how to be independent and helps them learn to do things for themselves.’’
