Taree sisters Gina and Sonya Varagnolo will be opening their latest exhibition Gina and Sonya Varagnolo: Contemporary New Work, which demonstrates the sophistication of the new generation of Aboriginal artists.

The sisters’ extensive body of work, which is based on intricate Aboriginal design and produced in luscious paint on canvas, has been produced as part of the Manning Regional Art Gallery’s artists-in-residence program.

Sonya said nature was a big inspiration for her art.

“The inspiration for these artworks came from an Indigenous Design Course I did in 2013 at the Manning Regional Art Gallery, in connection with Great Lakes TAFE,” she said.

“Patterns in nature inspire my art – this includes patterns in sand and water and DNA, and I have used the symbols from sacred sites to show respect for the natural world.”

Manning Regional Art Gallery director Sue Mitchell expected Sonya and Gina to gain recognition as major Aboriginal artists.

“Their work shows a maturity and talent that will be welcomed in contemporary art circles,” she said.

Guest speaker will be Donna Rankin, the artist and founder of ‘Heart to Heart’.

Entry is $10 for adults and $7 for ‘friends’ members, and includes nibbles and a complimentary champagne.

Drinks are available at the FOGS bar, please RSVP for catering purposes.

The opening of the exhibition will be at 6.30pm on today, November 7.
