THE North-West could miss out on future industry development, tourism and business opportunities if the National Broadband Network fibre isn’t rolled out extensively in the region.

TasICT, the industry’s peak body, wants a commitment from federal member for Braddon Brett Whiteley and Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull to fully roll-out the NBN to the North-West.

The two will hold a community forum in Devonport next week.

TasICT executive officer Dean Winter said the North-West could be at a significant structural disadvantage if it did not receive fibre and instead got the inferior fibre to the node.

“The North-West has been left off the map when it comes to the NBN, work in Launceston and Hobart is almost completed,” Mr Winter said.

“Residents in Devonport, Ulverstone and Burnie would be really disappointed by the fact they haven’t been able to access the NBN.”

Mr Winter said if fibre was not connected, the North-West would be on the back foot straight away in terms of offering first-class infrastructure.

“As more and more businesses become broadband focused, the importance on having high-speed internet will be a must and businesses could choose to set up in Launceston or Hobart, rather than the North-West.”

Mr Whiteley yesterday confirmed Mr Turnbull had accepted an invitation to attend a community forum in Devonport on Monday.

“The Minister will join me in hosting a community forum on the NBN on Monday morning in Devonport.

“This forum will be a great opportunity to hear firsthand from the Minister about what the Abbott government is doing to roll-out the National Broadband Network as quickly as possible, at less cost to taxpayers and more affordably for customers.

“I do accept that there is much more to be done both here on the North-West and across Tasmania,” Mr Whiteley said.

The forum will be held from 10am on Monday at the Devonport Entertainment and Convention Centre in Rooke Street. To reserve a seat call 6431 1333.
