The 16-year-old Lilydale District High grade 10 student has been coached at the Lilydale gym for the past two years by trainer Terry Dwyer.

McFerran took on 20-year-old Brodey Clayton in the junior 57-kilogram class at the Tasmanian titles last weekend and, despite giving away nearly five years to his opponent, emerged victorious.

‘‘I coached Daniel Geale when he was the same age, and Layton reminds me very much of Daniel,’’ Dwyer said.

‘‘He’s just a good, quiet, clean country kid who has won ten straight I think.

‘‘We’ve come up the ladder this year and beaten four or five boys we had to beat, including last week when we took on the 20-year-old and won the Tasmanian title.’’

Dwyer, who has been coaching boxers for 25 years – including his five sons, who were all multiple Australian champions – said McFerran would fight in the junior or schoolboy category at the Australian championships with fighters coming from every state.

‘‘We went in them last year and won the bronze, so this year we’re hoping to do better and get the big one,’’ he said.

‘‘We’ve beaten everyone in the state in his age and weight this year, and I reckon he has a really good future ahead of him.’’
