However, full-time jobs declined by about 200.

Total jobs hit 237,800 in October in trend terms, the ABS found.

That was the most since November 2011, and a long way ahead of the 230,400 jobs recorded for October 2013.

The state remains some way off its all-time jobs record of 242,000, which was set in October 2008, just as the global financial crisis was starting to bite.

October was a very different story for men and women in Tasmania.

Total female employment grew by 500, to 112,000, while male employment declined by 200, to 125,800.

Full-time jobs were down to 150,900, with the rise in total employment due to growth in part-time work.

The jobless rate stayed at 7.2 per cent and the participation rate was steady.

Nationally, seasonally adjusted, 24,100 jobs were gained in October. The number of unemployed people grew by 7100, to 772,100.

That is about 1.5 times the size of the Tasmanian population.

Treasurer Peter Gutwein said the jobs growth was another positive sign for the state economy.

“Retail trade is at a record high, business confidence is through the roof, building activity is up and Tasmania has one of the fastest growing economies in the country,” he said.

Federal Employment Minister Eric Abetz said the national increase of 33,400 full-time positions was encouraging, but the “underlying softness” in the labour market showed there was much more to be done.

“This result underscores the importance for the Senate to pass legislation that will create more job opportunities, in particular for young Australians who are eager to gain employment,” Senator Abetz said.
