The unique violins made by Neville Telford were stolen from a locked vehicle in Mount Gambier last month.

Mr Telford started making violins and guitars as a hobby in 2002, using Australian timber, including banksia, and wood collected from overseas travels.

He then put the instruments to use, performing for residents at an aged care facility in Mount Gambier with his hand-crafted violins every second Friday.

“I entertained residents with a tune,” Mr Telford said.

But on Tuesday, October 21, three of his treasured violins were taken from the back seat of Mr Telford’s locked vehicle on James Street when someone used a mechanism to open the window and steal the instruments.

The incident occurred between 6pm and 6.45pm.

“They are very important to me,” Mr Telford said.

“There is a lot of sentimental value and I would love to see them returned.

“I spent hours hand-crafting them.”

A light wooden violin, a dark wooden violin and a bright red violin with a distinct stripe of lighter wood on the back were stolen.

A reward is offered for the return of the three violins.

Mr Telford said it was possible someone would try to sell the violins on the internet or overseas.

“I would really like them back,” he said.

Mr Telford also travels to Vanuatu to participate in civil aid work and helps children make their own violins.

“I’ve taught several people in Vanuatu how to make violins which they can sell and earn money for themselves,” he said.

“It is a lengthy process to craft a violin and most of the time they enjoy them so much that they keep theminstead.”

Anyone with any information about the theft should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
