The recently formed Goonoo Goonoo Goannas cricket side entered the social Bush Cricket competition this year and tomorrow will return to a ground where it last played in 1966, reported John Trickett.

It will play the Kingswood Krows from 1pm, he advised The Leader.

“Goonoo Gooonoo Station will celebrate hosting its first cricket game since 1966,” Trickett said.

“Although nearly 50 years has passed, Goonoo Goonoo still boasts the same two openers from its last foray into competitive cricket.”

Unfortunately those two openers, Col Baron and Noel Cook, won’t be playing tomorrow, Col’s away at the Australian Over 60s Championships in Melbourne and Noel Cook is umpiring in the local Tamworth and District Cricket Association grade competition, said team captain Joel Mace.

Joel is also the manager of Goonoo Station.

“We used to have a side but I’m not sure what grade they played in,” Joel Mace said.

“Talking to Col and Noel about it they were just teenagers. They opened for us again up at Woolomin (first game of new season).

“We used to have players from the district, Gowrie and Garoo play.

“And there was a time here when if you didn’t play cricket you didn’t have a job,” he laughed.

Much work has also gone on to re-establish the old ground at the top of the hill overlooking the station homestead and highway.

A new synthetic pitch was being laid this week on top of the original limestone concrete slab as well.

Joel said reviving the old team is all about a bit of fun as well as enabling many of the workers from the company to play together in a relaxed atmosphere.

He thanks Goonoo Goonoo Station owners Tony and Karen Haggarty for their support and enabling the old pitch to be re-surfaced and the ground brought up to playing standard.

He said “everyone is welcome” to come out and have a look although the station homestead is out of bounds as it’s still under reconstruction.

There will be a barbecue and refreshments on sale at the game.
