According to the Department of Health and Human Services’ quarterly report, in the 12 months to June 30, 2014, the number of people waiting for elective surgery increased by 15.5 per cent at the Royal Hobart Hospital, 13.8 per cent at the Launceston General Hospital, 18.5 per cent at the North West Regional Hospital and 21.1 per cent at the Mersey Community Hospital.

However, this was before the state government provided funding in August for additional elective surgeries.

The median waiting time for elective surgery remained the same at the RHH, but increased by 18 days at the LGH, eight days at the NWRH and six days at the MCH.

Emergency department demand also increased at the LGH and RHH, and the LGH met national benchmarks for resuscitation, emergency and non-urgent ED patients within recommended timeframes.

The report said the LGH showed improvement in other categories (urgent and semi-urgent), compared to the previous year.

There was a 7.6 per cent increase in admissions to acute mental health facilities and a significant 58.6 per cent rise in the number of community and residential clients under the care of mental health services.

The report said the increase in clients in community and residential care was positive as it kept them out of hospital and supported them with daily life.

There was a 27.4 per cent drop in the number of child protection notifications referred for investigation while the number of notifications not investigated within the recommended timeframe increased from one to 17.
