IT’S a good time to be a part of the Buninyong Bowling Club.

Men’s chairman Steve Albin knows this better than most.

Albin, who returned to the head role at the start of the year, has been one of the biggest influences behind Buninyong’s recently constructed clubhouse.

The clubrooms have been the talk of the new Ballarat District Bowling Division season and they aren’t even finished.

“It’s slowly getting into gear. There’s still a bit to do around the place,” Albin said.

“It’s been a long time and a lot of work, but it’s made a big difference.

“I was in the role of president more than a year ago and I thought I may as well see it out (construction of the clubrooms) to the end.

“As it was, I couldn’t make it to the grand opening anyway, which has a bit of a shame,” he laughed.

Albin took to bowls eight years ago when a close friend persuaded him to go to Buninyong’s Friday night sessions.

Two years later he was the bar manager and shortly after that an integral part of the building committee featuring Ken Sargeant, Steve Falconer, Sandra Chapman and Terry McDonald, that allowed the club to pursue its dream of a new facility.

Back in those days, Buninyong, one of just 11 clubs Australia-wide located in botanical gardens and had a meagre membership of around 50 bowlers.

Now it boasts more than 100 heads and is one of the most desirable outfits in the BDBD.

However, Albin still has unfinished business.

“There’s still a lot of little things to go around the club. There’s shedding to go up as well as a recreation area and, in the short term, we’re hoping to be able to add another rink to the green,” he said.

“I just love the game. Once you play you can’t stop. I’ve never seen anyone walk away from it and we’re a happy little club over here.”
