The funding will be used under the direction of Ballarat Agricultural and Pastoral Society to decide on the future of the site.

Premier Denis Napthine made it clear the funding could be used for a potential relocation if the society believed that to be the best option.

The funding is $480,000 more than has been committed by Labor, which is focused on an upgrade of the current site.

“One of the challenges for the Ballarat Show and the Ballarat A and P Society is where they go into the future,” Dr Napthine said.

“There are certainly constraints on this site and challenges in regard to some of their infrastructure.

“We believe the best decisions about local organisations are best left to the local community, so while we are providing this $5.48 million, we are looking for the Ballarat A and P Society to work with the local council, their stakeholders to decide where they are heading over the next 20, 50 or 100 years.”

Ballarat Agricultural and Pastoral Society director Gerard Ballinger was thrilled with the announcement but said no decision had been made about any potential relocation.

However, he said that now funding had been secured from both sides of politics, more work would need to be done to decide on future options.

“It is now time that more work will need to be done with the council to look at how to progress things,” he said.

“After the show, we are going to have a strategic meeting with the councillors to expand on this announcement and work toward a plan.”

Mr Ballinger could not comment on any other sites the society was looking but said there had been many “healthy discussions” about the best way forward.
