Attacks put heat on the mayor

MOUNT Isa Mayor Tony McGrady believes he is being attacked weekly through a political smear campaign.

Former Mount Isa mayor Ron McCullough – who was in the mayoral position for 18 years – says he is “guilty” of publicly opposing some of Cr McGrady’s decisions.

“I’m just saying the things I think he’s done wrong,” Mr McCullough said.

“Going back to the water fiasco we had, of course I’m going to comment.

“I think that’s been very badly handled.”

Cr McGrady would not name the person he believed was behind the campaign. He also suspected several councillors were being influenced by somebody outside the council, but did not allege the campaign was connected.

“[We] get people in the council who I suspect are getting riding instructions from someone outside the council,” he said.

He acknowledged the seven Mount Isa councillors were divided into two factions – and he believed the faction that opposed him was part of the smear campaign.

“The venom has been displayed against me by one or two individuals in the last two years at least,” Cr McGrady said.

“I’m big, I’m tough, I can take it.

“But I have a wife and kids.”

Mr McCullough said many members of the community frequently came to him to benefit from his knowledge in local government affairs – but did not say if this included councillors.

He has lived in Mount Isa about 50 years and is concerned about the direction Mount Isa was taking to survive.

“I’m simply a Mount Isan with a love of the city and I want it to prosper,” Mr McCullough said.

“I will admit to regularly attacking him [Cr McGrady] on things he’s done.

“I have nothing against Tony McGrady.”

It was never implied by anybody that Mr McCullough was advising current councillors.

Mr McCullough frequently writes letters in The North West Star criticising the direction of the Mount Isa City Council.

The Mayor and Mr McCullough have often been critical of the other’s policies and views, and Mr McCullough frequently publishes his views in letters to the newspaper.
