Nicole Hunter spent hours yesterday locked to a bulldozer in the Pilliga in a bid to disrupt the work of gas giant Santos.

The Coonabarabran woman was supported in her action by about two dozen fellow locals holding anti-CSG placards.

Mrs Hunter, who recently moved with her husbandfrom Gulargambone to Coonabarabran to raise their young children, said she was willing to be arrested to make her point.

“I’m afraid to do this, but it’s worth getting arrested to defend what we’ve got here,” she said.

“We love this area and don’t want to see it industrialised.

“We want to preserve the character of our town and region.

“We don’t want to see our region industrialised and our towns become boom-bust mining towns.”

Santos has plans to drill up to 850 wells and extract about 200 terajoules a day of gas from coal seams around the Narrabri shire.

In a statement, a Santos spokesman said the protest had caused a “minor interruption” to work at its Dewhurst 30 pad.

“While we acknowledge and respect the right of individuals to lawfully and safely protest, there must also be respect for our workers and contractors on site,” the spokesman said.

“Santos has received all necessary regulatory approvals to carry out this work, which is placed ina section of the state forest specifically zoned for natural gasdevelopment.”

Mrs Hunter, who spent about five hours locked to the bulldozer, released herself when asked by police and avoided arrest.
