On December 7 more than 600 cyclists will head off for the 2014 Sally’s Ride Tamar Valley Cycle Challenge.

The event hopes to raise funds and create awareness for youth around Tasmania who are suffering with mental health issues.

The day will include events for all ages and fitness types – from the 160-kilometre ride around the Tamar Valley to the 20-kilometre event for beginners.

Ms Fletcher said she is excited to see how the event had changed over the past few years.

‘‘The first time I rode around Tasmania it took nine days to ride 1400 kilometres,’’ she said.

‘‘I did that a couple of times, but then it just got a bit too big.

‘‘I never thought it would get as big as it is now.’’

This year all funds raised from entry fees will be donated to the charity Resilient Youth Australia.

Six primary schools around Launceston have been chosen to participate in the event and work with the charity to improve the mental health of their pupils.

Ms Fletcher said she hoped the ride and the connection with younger children would spread a positive message to the Northern community.

‘‘The reason I started this in the first place was to improve mental health,’’ she said.

‘‘We want to try and help kids feel good about themselves.

‘‘I want people to talk about their mental health.’’

Since 2009 the Rotary Club of Central Launceston has been working with Ms Fletcher to make the even bigger and better each year.

Professional cyclists Chris Froome and Richie Porte are expected to make an appearance on the day.
